Roe v. Wade overturned: Separating fact from fiction

Last year, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the historic 1973 ruling that protected abortion as a constitutional right. When overturned, it returned authority to regulate abortion access to each of the 50 states.

A woman’s access to abortion now depends on her state residence and their respective abortion laws. Read this article to separate common myths from the facts and better understand your pregnancy options.

What Does the Supreme Court’s Overruling Mean for Women in New York?

New York is one of the states that already had state laws protecting abortion three years before the overturning of Roe v. Wade.  Right now, abortion is legal in our state up to viability outside the womb, around 24 weeks. After this, the law permits abortion if the pregnancy endangers the woman’s life.

Will the Ruling Affect Women’s Access to Healthcare?

The overruling of Roe v. Wade did not affect women’s access to pregnancy-related healthcare outside of abortion.

Women will have access to care for pregnancy-related conditions such as ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, pre-eclampsia, etc. Even in many states where abortion is more regulated, provisions are made in the event the pregnancy is life-threatening to the woman.

Outside of some states banning elective abortions, women will have the same healthcare access as before this Supreme Court ruling.
