Finding out you’re unexpectedly pregnant can be an overwhelming and lonely experience. You’re the first to find out, and only you decide who you will tell.
Who will you tell? What do you want to do next?
Life Choices Center understands how challenging this situation can be, especially if your pregnancy was unintended. However, you’re not alone.
Our center can be a support system, and we also encourage you to seek out your own support system as you consider your pregnancy options.
Who Should You Tell and When?
The only way to lean on your support system is to tell your loved ones you are pregnant. It may seem early if you just found out, but if you’re considering your options right now, inviting others in can ensure you aren’t making a decision alone.
Feeling isolated could sway your decision or make you rule out other possibilities.
Whenever you’re ready, share your news with someone you trust in your support system, starting with your partner. You may also want to tell a parent or close friend.
Sharing will allow them to encourage and support you as you navigate your options.
What if They Pressure You?
The downside of sharing with those closest to you is they may have strong opinions. Make sure you’re clear from the beginning that the decision is ultimately up to you.
Set healthy boundaries. You love them and need their support more than ever, and this means not pressuring you but instead listening and allowing you to explore your options.
These options might be abortion, adoption, or parenting. It takes time to think through each one.
If they are open to it, ask if they would be willing to support you if you chose any of the three options. This would be helpful information in your decision-making process.
Seek Neutral Support
Not every woman has an existing support system or family to lean on. However, every woman deserves to feel encouraged and supported during her pregnancy.
